Here's what the Global Organic Textile Standard covers, how it's verified, and why it's the benchmark worth looking for.

There are a lot of sustainability labels in fashion. Some are rigorous. Most are not. GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, sits firmly in the rigorous category. If you have been trying to figure out what it actually means and why brands keep citing it, here is the clear version.

What GOTS Stands For

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It is an independent international certification that covers organic textiles from raw fibre through to the finished product. It was established in 2006 by a group of organisations including the Soil Association in the UK, and is now recognised as the leading global standard for organic textiles.

The key word is "global." GOTS is not a regional standard or a self-certification. It is an internationally recognised system with independent third-party auditing at every stage of the supply chain. A brand cannot simply claim GOTS certification. It has to be verified, renewed, and maintained.

What GOTS Actually Certifies

This is where GOTS differs from a lot of the looser "eco" and "sustainable" labels you will find in fashion. GOTS does not just cover how the raw cotton was grown. It covers the entire journey from fibre to finished garment.

That includes:

Fibre sourcing. The raw cotton (or other natural fibre) must be certified organic under recognised agricultural standards. No synthetic pesticides, no artificial fertilisers, no genetically modified seeds. Our organic cotton guide explains exactly what this means at the farming level.

Processing. The fabric must be processed without harmful chemicals. GOTS maintains a list of prohibited substances, and dyeing and finishing processes are assessed against it.

Dyes and inks. GOTS prohibits toxic dyes and requires that any chemical inputs meet strict criteria for human health and environmental impact. This covers everything from the colour processes to the finishing treatments.

Wastewater. Production facilities must have wastewater treatment in place that meets GOTS standards. The chemicals going into the water system are regulated, not just the ones going into the garment.

Social accountability. GOTS includes social criteria covering wages, working hours, health and safety, and freedom of association. These criteria are based on International Labour Organization conventions.

Traceability. Every input and every stage of production is documented and verified. You can trace a GOTS certified garment back through its supply chain.

The result is a certification that covers what "organic cotton" alone does not. You can read more about why the organic cotton growing stage is only the starting point in our organic cotton guide.

How GOTS Verification Works

GOTS certification is not self-declared. Brands and manufacturers must be audited by an approved GOTS certification body. The audit process includes physical inspection of facilities, review of documentation, and testing of products.

Certification must be renewed annually. Any company in the supply chain that handles GOTS certified material must itself be GOTS certified. That is what makes it a supply chain standard rather than a product label.

You can verify whether a brand is genuinely GOTS certified by searching the GOTS public database at global-standard.org. If a brand claims GOTS certification but does not appear in that database, the claim is not valid.

GOTS vs Other Certifications

A few comparisons worth knowing:

GOTS vs OCS (Organic Content Standard). OCS verifies that a product contains organic material but does not cover the full processing chain, social criteria, or chemical inputs. It is a narrower standard. GOTS is more comprehensive.

GOTS vs OEKO-TEX Standard 100. OEKO-TEX tests for harmful substances in finished garments, which is useful, but does not require organic farming or cover the full supply chain in the same way. The two are complementary rather than equivalent.

GOTS vs Fair Trade. Fair Trade certification focuses on social and economic criteria for farmers and workers. GOTS covers both environmental and social criteria but at the manufacturing and processing stage rather than primarily at the farming stage. Some brands hold both.

If a brand holds GOTS and SA8000, which is a social accountability standard covering factory conditions, they have covered both the environmental and the human side from production through to finished garment. This is the combination Rebel Warren holds.

Why It Matters for What You Buy

For the person buying a hoodie or a tee, GOTS certification is the most reliable shortcut available. It means the piece you are buying was made without toxic chemicals at any stage, in conditions that have been independently assessed, from fibre that was grown without synthetic pesticides.

It is not a perfect system. No certification is. But it is the most comprehensive one that exists for organic textiles, and it requires ongoing third-party verification rather than a one-time declaration.

If you want to understand the broader picture of why this matters for how you shop, our slow fashion guide covers the full argument.

How Rebel Warren Uses GOTS

Every Rebel Warren garment is produced from GOTS certified organic cotton. Production is handled by Teemill on the Isle of Wight, a GOTS certified facility running on solar energy. The SA8000 certification covers the social accountability side. Dyes are vegan and water-based.

The garments are also designed for Teemill's Remill circular system: at end of life, they can be returned and remade into new fabric. That addresses what happens after the GOTS certified production ends.

The Frostfire Hoodie, the Prismatic Rebel Sweatshirt, and the Chromatic Rebel Hoodie are all made to these standards.
